Description
Join us Thursday, March 23rd at 6:00 p.m. for our writing workshop focusing on essays for scholarships and college applications, as well as resumes needed for recommendation letters and college applications AT OUR SOUTHLAKE LOCATION!
College application essay writing can be an overwhelming experience for many students. Not only can the stakes be high, but it is not always easy or comfortable for students to write about themselves. Many students don’t know where to begin or how to come up with a topic or topics to write about. Others know what story they want to tell but don’t know how to organize their narrative. This workshop will help students:
- understand and analyze essay questions
- brainstorm essay topic(s)
- select an essay topic and generate a narrative with details and description
- explore organizational choices
- give and receive developmental feedback
Some of what we will focus on include the following:
Organization/Structure
We will look at the overall structure of the essay. It is vital that your essay follow a logical thought progression. Personal statements should not veer too far away from the essay topic but should still explore various sides of your personality, background, and interests.
Tone, voice, and style
Proofreading
After we have completed all of the content edits for your essay, we will proofread it together to check the flow. In other words, we will make sure the essay reads beautifully and is free of passive voice, clunky sentences, or difficult-to-read phrases. This is the last step in the revision stage.
Resumes
Our workshop will provide detailed explanations, as well as step-by-step processes, for creating an effective resume to be used for requesting letters of recommendation and college applications.
